Fossil1) A feature (or misfeature) that has remained for aeons for the sake of backwards compatibility.
2) A person who has been around the tech world for ages. Anyone who remembers punchcards is a fossil. Anyone who remembers mainframes is a fossil.
A borderline fossil is somebody who remembers CP/M. or life before the internet.
Unlike mainstream usage where a fossil is deemed out of touch, there is no such connotation in Hackish. While you still need lots of merit to reach such lofty climbs, a fossil is much more likely to be a highly respected alpha geek than a non-fossil.
